Oil Is Little Changed After Falling on Signs Gains Unjustified

May 23 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil was little changed after the biggest one-day drop in three weeks on concern that a surge to record prices this month isn't justified by demand.

Oil reached a record $135.09 a barrel yesterday, an increase of 20 percent since the start of the month, leading traders to sell contracts in order to lock in profits. Prices plunged $4.28 by the close. U.S. consumption averaged 20.3 million barrels a day in the past four weeks, down 1.3 percent from a year earlier, the Energy Department said May 21.

``Whenever we see prices surge to a record level, it does provide an incentive for people to sell,'' said Gerard Burg, an energy economist at National Australia Bank Ltd. in Melbourne. ``That highlights the volatility we've been seeing in this market. It really has increased quite dramatically.''

Crude oil for July delivery was at $131.06 a barrel, up 25 cents, at 9:54 a.m. in Singapore on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Yesterday, oil fell $2.36, or 1.8 percent, to settle at $130.81. Prices have risen 99 percent in the past year.
